Best Feature Film

Tessa Blake

An award-winning filmmaker and prolific television director, Tessa Blake is an alumna of AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women. Her films have premiered at Cannes, SXSW and Woodstock, won awards at Nantucket Film Festival and Human Rights Watch Film Festival, and been honored by the Academy.

As a writer, Tessa has written for ABC, NBC, FOX and Warner Brothers. Currently, she’s developing an international series slated to start production this year in Germany. 

She has directed plays for Naked Angels Theater Company and The Atlantic Theater Company, is a proud alumna of the 24 Hour Plays, and a founding advisor for The Moth.

Robert Bailey

Rob Bailey is a British Director and Producer who has been based in Los Angeles for 20 years. His extensive body of work includes The Wire, Treme, CSI and Gotham. Most recently he returned to the UK to be Producer and Lead Director on the HBO-MAX series Pennyworth.
 
He attended the National Film and Television School in the UK, where he  learned from notable film and TV directors such as Stephen Frears, Derek Jarman and Wojciech Marzewski. His NFTS Graduation film was bought by Channel 4 and was shown nationally. He  landed his first TV directing job 2 years after graduating which led to non-stop work in the UK,  culminating in the launch of the BAFTA-winning BBC series MI5.

Attracting attention from this, he was asked to work for HBO on the emerging TV show The Wire and shortly afterwards he began a long association with Jerry Bruckheimer on show’s such as Without A Trace, CSI – Crime Scene Investigation and “CSI:NY”. Which he produced and directed. 

He has worked on many US shows for both Network and Streaming services.

Marlis Pujol

Marlis Pujol is a Cuban American producer with a distinguished career in television. A Golden Globe winner for her work on “The Kominsky Method” in 2019, and a two-time Emmy nominee, Pujol’s credits include acclaimed series such as HBO’s “The Wire,” “True Blood,” & “Ballers.” She currently serves as a Co-Executive Producer on Apple TV+’s comedy “Mythic Quest,” and is also a dedicated advocate for the hiring and mentoring of Latino talent within the industry, solidifying her impact both on and off-screen.

Best Documentary Film

Sarah Anthony

Sarah Anthony was most recently the Producer of Kiss the Future alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The documentary highlights the underground art and music scene during the siege of Sarajevo, and U2’s relationship with the city. The film premiered at Berlin, Tribeca, Rome and many other festivals, winning the Audience Award at the Sarajevo and Ljubljana Film Festivals. It was released by AMC, Odeon and Paramount Plus in 2024.

Her previous project was the six part series Light and Magic for Disney, as the Story Producer for director Lawrence Kasdan with Imagine and Lucas films. She was the Story Producer on the top ten Netflix series Heist for Dirty Robber, and Producer on the Netflix documentary Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator. She was the line producer and lead Producer on the Grammy-winning HBO documentary series, The Defiant Ones, and on the Emmy-nominated The Price of Free (formerly titled Kailash), a documentary about child slavery which won the 2018 Sundance Festival Grand Jury Prize. She was the Consulting Producer for Making a Murderer Season 2 for Netflix. 

Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Sarah spent the majority of her childhood in West Virginia. She began her documentary career in London, with films on subjects ranging from the Iraq war to the Ming Voyages of the 1400’s. She was Associate Producer for PBS FRONTLINE on The Age of AIDS, a four hour series covering the history of the HIV/AIDS pandemic with won an Emmy and the Dupont Peabody Award. In 2007 she moved to Los Angeles and joined Exclusive Media as the Co-head of Documentary Features. At Exclusive she supervised development, production and distribution on multiple documentaries including Martin Scorsese’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World, Billy Joel’s Last Play at Shea, and the Academy Award-winning Undefeated. She then returned to FRONTLINE as co-producer on Endgame: AIDS In Black America, and from there went on to line-produce The World According to Dick Cheney for Showtime. 

Sarah worked extensively with director Davis Guggenheim and the Emerson Collective on a variety of social justice issues, from immigration reform to redesigning the American high school system. She is passionate about using media to inspire positive social change.

Alejandra Espasande Bouza

Alejandra Espasande Bouza is a museum educator, archivist, and curator dedicated to documenting, preserving, and showcasing underrepresented stories in cinema. She holds a B.A. in Film Production from USC and an M.A. in Moving Image Archive Studies from UCLA. She has held various roles at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and The Walt Disney Company. Currently, she serves as the director of the LA Cultural Heritage Preservation Society, a non-profit committed to safeguarding the city’s rich cultural legacy. Recently, she curated ¡HABLADA EN ESPAÑOL! The Legacy of Hollywood’s Spanish-Language Cinema (1929–1939) and is writing a book on this often-overlooked chapter of Los Angeles film history.

Gabriele Hayes

Gabriele Hayes was born in former East Germany. After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, she moved to the US and now lives in Los Angeles. 
 
Gabriele produced the documentary Skid Row Marathon (2019) which has received over 30 film festival awards. She also produced One Germany, The Other Side of the Wall, which features interviews with former German President Joachim Gauck, political prisoners, Stasi officers, East German rock musicians, actors and comedians.  
 
Over the last few years Gabriele has worked on several magazine pieces for German TV. 

Best Short Fiction Film

Leo Behrens

Leo Behrens is an award-winning Norwegian director and cinematographer based in Los Angeles. After graduating from Westerdals Film & TV Norway in 2010, Leo swiftly established himself as a cinematographer and director, contributing to an array of TV shows, short films, feature films, and documentaries both in the US and in Norway. In 2023, he earned his cinematography degree from the prestigious American Film Institute Conservatory. Leo is an associate member of the Norwegian Society of Cinematographers and the Society of Camera Operators in the United States. Leo was the writer, director and cinematographer of the 35mm short film SKIN, which won the Gold Medal at the 2023 Student Academy Awards and secured him a gold alumni status with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. SKIN has been showcased at over 50 festivals, won 9 awards, and nominated for 20.

Michael Cory Davis

Michael is a triple threat: An actor, filmmaker, and producer.  He is driven by a passion to create art that entertains audiences and fosters robust conversations about our shared human journey.
This began with his directorial debut, the award-winning film, Svetlana’s Journey. Touched by the real-life story of a 13-year-old Bulgarian girl sold by her adoptive parents and trafficked to Holland for prostitution, Michael wrote and directed Svetlana’s Journey, a film based on her life. Svetlana’s Journey was the winner of the 2005 Hollywood Film Festival Best Short Subject Award and the HDFEST DeffieAward for Best HD Dramatic Film.

Davis partnered with the Bulgarian non-profit organization Face To Face, the US Embassy and corporate sponsor M-tel to implement an awareness campaign to raise funding for rehabilitation centers and orphanages in Bulgaria, toured the country with the film, and promoted the airing of Svetlana’s Journey on Bulgarian television. It was this effort that helped to the creation of the first ever Bulgarian Commission to combat Trafficking in Persons.

Michael’s second film, Cargo: Innocence Lost, a documentary on sex trafficking in the United States, has been lauded for its effective spotlight on the issue here at home. In 2008, Michael created the I Stop Traffic Awareness campaign using his films as a way to spread awareness, support victims, and organizations. Michael toured the world creating awareness events/film screenings with numerous organizations, such as: FBI, Homeland Security, LAPD, National Association of County Commissioners, National Foundation of Women Legislators, People To People International, United Nations Film Association, Salvation Army, Soroptomist, and Los Angeles County Unity Coalition. Michael has taken part in more than 50 panel discussions, most notably partnering with Suzanne Mubarek, the First Lady of Egypt, and her Excellency Sheikha Sabiqa, the Queen of Bahrain, on their anti-trafficking campaigns.

He is the recipient of the prestigious People to People International (founded by Dwight Eisenhower) Make a Difference Award and was honored in a ceremony alongside the Prime Minister of Albania and the president of Relief International. His work has been featured onCNN, ABC World News Tonight, and The Tyra Banks Show, to name a few.

Michael created Journey Film Group Inc., in 2005 and has created content for Lionsgate and AMC for the Emmy-award winning television series Mad Men for season two through five. Other notable clients include: The City of Los Angeles, Volkswagen, The Cairo Film Festival, Los Angeles Unity Coalition, National Council of Jewish Women. Journey Film Group’s films have been distributed on streamers such as: HULU, TUBI, PrimeVideo, REDBOX.

Michael is the founder of Artists United for Social Justice, a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to create and distribute multi-media to raise awareness about social injustices.

Brenna Malloy

Brenna Malloy has directed over 30 episodes of major television on shows 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, FBI, FBI: International, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Chicago Fire, FBI: International, and Chicago PD. Brenna served as Supervising Producer, as well as directed half of the first season of On Call for Wolf Entertainment and Amazon. Her MFA thesis film Rocket, a story about a female racecar driver, throws the audience into the world of 1950s dirt track racing. The half hour short earned a Student Academy Award in 2016 and screened in more than 40 festivals in eight countries. Before breaking in to television she was a participant of 2018 Ryan Murphy’s Half Initiative, and a fellow of the 2019-20 NBC Female Forward program.

Lori Nelson

Lori J. Nelson currently works for Warner Bros. Pictures as their Executive Vice President of Visual Effects.  Her job involves overseeing visual effects (VFX) for all Warner Bros. and DC features. Lori has been working in the VFX field for over 40 years with experience that includes visual effects facility work, freelance VFX producing and now studio work.  She lives in LA and has a daughter who is currently studying art in Chicago.

Todd Thompson

Todd Thompson is the Co-Founder of SafeSpace Navigation and CEO of Fresh Air Clean Water (FACW), a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating short form documentaries, social media, and immersive experiences. 

He is a key protagonist in the Emmy award-winning documentary “Sketching the Silk Road”. His career in the film and arts industry spans over 20 years, and he has collaborated as a Creative Director with numerous companies, which include the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, ESPN, and X-Games.

Todd holds an MFA in Computer Graphics & Visual Effects and a BS in Computer Science and Sociology. His path has led him to take on numerous creative roles which include production and post-production VFX, gallery artist, and designer. 

Todd is currently creating and producing the documentary, “Generation Trauma”, humanizing the overwhelming psychological effects the current LA Wildfires and Covid-19 are having on today’s youth. In addition, he is an Executive Producer on “Planet Horizon: An Explorer’s Awakening”, an immersive film and music experience dedicated to the rediscovering our connection with the earth.

Jonathan Berman

Jonathan Berman creates and collaborates on real-life stories about space age visionaries, secret societies, and hidden worlds. He began as an assistant on Pee Wee’s Playhouse, The Toxic Avenger 2, and other NYC independent projects Works include The Shvitz, which explores NYC’s traditional steambaths; My Friend Paul, which explores the intersection of mental illness, friendship, and crime; and Commune, the first modern reexamination of Sixties communal counterculture.  He produced and directed Calling All Earthlings, an ethnographic look at desert UFO culture.  Other projects include the France-Portugal comedy On The Run; the German music documentary Sabbath in Paradise; and Maternity Ward for NY Times Television. Project partners including top film festivals like Slamdance and Jerusalem, venues like ARTE, BBC, MOMA NYC, the Laemmle and Cinema Village theaters; and project partners like the CPB/ITVS, NEA, NYSCA, and more. Berma. is a professor in film at Cal State San Marcos and lives in Los Angeles and NY.

Omandi Moore-Washington

Omandi Moore-Washington attended the California College of the Arts for animation and worked as a storyboard revisionist on Seasons 2 through 4 of Invincible. He is from Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA and currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Rachel Lewis

Rachel Lewis is an accomplished 2D animator with over 15 years of experience across television, gaming, and advertising. With a profound passion for animation, she has attended animation festivals worldwide, where she has developed an extensive appreciation for both local and international works. As an admirer of the distinct narratives and styles found in European cinema, Rachel eagerly anticipates the diverse array of animation that will be showcased at SEEfest this year, celebrating and promoting the vibrant animation community of South East Europe.

Peter Jayne

Peter Jayne is an artist and animator with almost twenty years of experience in arts and entertainment specializing in stop-motion, 2D animation, VFX, and compositing. With a deep appreciation and understanding for all aspects of cinema, he brings a keen eye for storytelling and technique to the judging panel. Passionate about the art of animation, he is excited to celebrate innovative and compelling short films at SEEfest. 

Best Cinematography in a Feature Film

Dennis Flippin

Dennis L. Flippin Jr.’s journey in visual storytelling began at age 8 when his uncle gifted him his first 35mm camera. His early passion led him to become NBC 9 News’ youngest editor at age 19, following a film production trade school education and internship at 16. As founder of Flippin Entertainment LLC (est. 2000), Dennis has built an impressive portfolio spanning over 25 years in cinematography. His extensive technical expertise includes work with leading camera systems from ARRI, RED, and other major manufacturers, allowing him to adapt to any production’s specific needs. His work includes the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” (2009), and collaborations with sports and entertainment icons including Michael Jordan, Floyd Mayweather, and actors Michael Jai White and Danny Trejo.

His early career highlights include working with Warren Miller and executing three successful Nike campaigns, which inspired the launch of his production company. Based in Los Angeles, Dennis combines traditional cinematography with cutting-edge aerial technology as an FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot, offering both 4K aerial and 6K ground cinematography capabilities. He has completed six feature films and five short films in LA over the past seven years as Director of Photography. Currently, he’s developing several feature projects, including a documentary, while continuing to push the boundaries of visual storytelling through innovative cinematography techniques.

Valentina Caniglia

Valentina Caniglia is an award winning cinematographer/director/producer born in Naples, Italy living in Africa, UK, Europe. After being in New York for more than a decade, she moved to Los Angeles. Valentina Caniglia was named in ‘Meet the Cinematographers Behind Some of the Biggest Movies’ TeenVogue’s article and selected by the ASC vision committee to receive the prestigious ASC Vision Mentorship Award program.

Valentina is known for her lighting and camera work on Feature films, TV series, commercials, music videos. Caniglia’s amazing lighting and camera work is shown on the latest TV series The Captain directed by Randy Wilkins and Spike Lee, Executive Producer by Spike Lee, the acclaimed feature film Pomegranates and Myrrh, winner of the Golden Dagger at Muscat Film Festival for Best Cinematography. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received the Best Film Award at Doha Tribeca Film Festival.

Caniglia’s incredible cinematography on a black and white feature film Adieu Lacan starring David Patrick Kelly won two best cinematography awards at Cult Critic Movie Awards (CCMA) and Global film festival Awards, Soyka two times winner for best cinematography award at New York Cinematography awards, Canadian Cinematography awards; Fire In Water won the best cinematography award at Los Angeles film festival and Madeline’s Oil, won Best Cinematography award at the Louisiana International film festival.

Valentina is known for the beautiful emotional frames behind Without Grace starring Emmy award winner Ann Dowd, the extraordinary cinematography work for 3 days rising starring Mickey Rourke, Ice-T, Peter Greene, her brilliant work on the film Tape directed by Deborah Kampmeier (Star Trek:Picard, Clarice, Queen Sugar,Virgin, Hounddog) starring Isabelle Fuhrman, and Valentina’s stunning cinematography on the video Stand for a Change starring Vanessa Williams, Billy Porter.

Her wonderful cinematography is shown at the Apple TV series Dear X S2 starring Viola Davis, Ava Du Vernay, Jane Fonda, Sandra Oh, Selena Gomez, Original Netflix series Gypsy starring Naomi Watts, Amazon Prime & Apple TV The Last Supper : A Sopranos story starring David Chase, Federico Castelluccio, Vincent Curatola, Arthur Nascarella, Vincent Pastore which received the Television Academy Emmy Awards 2023 nomination.

Valentina’s recent cinematography is the drama/thriller feature film called ISOLA (Island) starring Fanny Ardant and Joanna Kulig (91st Academy awards and 72nd BATFA Film Awards nomination Best foreign film Cold War) exquisitely filmed through emotional and expressive visuals at the Elba’s Island, Italy.

The paranormal/supernatural thriller feature film, Quail Hallow with Peyton Wich (Stranger Things) and Thomas Francis Murphy and the Drama feature film Resentment with Jon Ponton and Lawrence Gilliard Jr. These movies will all be released in 2024.
Among other films Valentina Caniglia directed “The Amytal Therapy” which was nominated and for best director at multiple film festivals around the world.

Caniglia has worked as a cinematographer for HBO, Netflix, Voyage TV Showtime. She has lensed many nationally aired commercials for British Airways, Dungeons and Dragons, Ford, Nike, GBX Shoes, Planned and Parenthood, Vivitar, Novomatic Marilyn Monroe, Pukka, Altec which received the Telly Awards.

Caniglia has worked on music videos for Aesop Rock, which was number one on MTV’s top ten chart;The Roots, Miss Peppermint,The Stein, Jesse Lynn Madera.

Valentina’s cinematography is attached to TV series Morning, Paris! with Margins Films, Umberto D. (the sequel of the masterpiece past movie by Vittorio De Sica), Our Thoughts with Cuyo Productions and Persephone directed by Deborah Kampmeier.

Valentina translates any kind of projects through an emotional visual journey which always supports the right style and appropriate look for each different stories. Many magazines like American Cinematographer, British Cinematographer describes her cinematography simply unique.

Jihane Mrad Balaa

Jihane Mrad Balaa was born and raised in a small town in the mountains of Lebanon. She experienced early success at the age of 16 in front of the camera as a recurring actress on two popular Lebanese TV shows. From Lebanon, Jihane found a new home in Miami, FL. With the film industry still tugging at her heart, she went on to earn a degree in Film Production, Theatre Arts and French literature from the Uni of Miami.

In 2007 Jihane relocated to Los Angeles where she achieved a successful career in the film industry as a Camera Woman. She has worked in the camera department for almost 20 years on hit TV shows including American Horror Story, 911, Kominsky Method, the last ship, and films including Bumblebee. This career gave her a front row seat to observe one director after another which sparked a fire in her to pursue Directing.

Having completed the Ryan Murphy Directors program in 2019, Jihane teamed up with NBA player Thanasis Antetokounmpo to produce and Direct her first feature Film Twisted Vines in 2021/2022. The movie found success in the film festival round, selected in 16 festivals and a sweeping win of 6 including best director and best feature film which lead to distribution. That project put her on the map as a Director and landed her a directing spot on the hit TV show 9-1-1, and the honor to become a member of the Directors Guild of America.

Jihane is Fluent in English, French and Arabic, her goal is to achieve a career as an episodic director and find a balance between the USA, Europe and the Middle East where she can bring her creativity, hard work, unique perspective and Hollywood expertise and put them on the big or silver screen.

Best Cinematography in a Documentary Film

Ivan Cordeiro

Ivan Cordeiro, born in Recife, Brazil, started his film career as a member of  the influential  Brazilian Super 8 film movement.  His Super 8 film CENSURA LIVRE, a documentary about the disappearance of street cinemas in Recife, is an iconic cultural reference and is on the list of best films by several critics and filmmakers. Ivan’s films have successfully participated in international festivals and screenings including Festival Biarritz Amérique Latine, La Cinémathéque Française, Janela Internacional de Cinema do Recife, Curta 8 among others.  

Ivan studied Communication and Journalism in Los Angeles California where he currently resides and operates EYE SEE FILMS, an independent production company dedicated to documentary films with an emphasis on preserving memory.  As a pioneer and expert in analog cinema,  Ivan curates film screenings, conducts Super 8 workshops, and offers digital  film scanning services and restoration in all formats.

Mark Hayes

Mark Hayes directed the feature-length documentary Skid Row Marathon (2019) which has received numerous festival awards around the world. 
 
His other films include One Germany, the Other Side of the Wall which examined the lingering differences between East and West Germany twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and From Red State to Golden State which highlighted the migration of Soviet Jews to Los Angeles.  
 
Over the years he has directed segments for HBO and news outlets in Germany, Ukraine, Italy, Africa, Great Britain, Austria, and the US.
 
Mark has taught screenwriting at Southern Methodist University and is a member of the Writers Guild of America.

Denny Dugally

Denny Dugally is a Production Designer who has worked in the film and television industry for over 30 years. Her achievements include an Emmy for Art Direction for the pilot of NYPD Blue and an Emmy nomination for the pilot of the TV series Arrested Development. Denny has been fortunate to work with some of the most talented creators in film and television including JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves, Joe & Anthony Russo, Chuck Lorre and Ryan Murphy to name just a few. Her work encompasses everything from the films Star Trek Beyond and America’s Sweethearts to the television series Without a Trace, Brothers & Sisters, Gilmore Girls, The Kominsky Method and 911: Lone Star.

In addition to her design work Denny is an avid photographer with an emphasis in wildlife. She’s traveled to 6 continents to photograph everything from polar bears to penguins and all the animals in between. She has enjoyed commercial success and her photographs hang in collections here and abroad.
